It seems that more and more brides are choosing silk flowers as an affordable alternative to real flowers these days. But are silk flowers right for you? Both real and silk flowers have their advantages and disadvantages - it's just a matter of deciding which of those elements works best for you and your wedding. Ultimately choosing between the two comes down to cost, durability, appearance, and convenience.

The advantages of real flowers are obvious to most. Their wonderful scent and exquisite detail make them the likely choice for many brides. Brides using real flowers usually have more florists to choose from than those using silk. There is also the feeling of luxury and sentiment that real flowers evoke in some people. Using real flowers can lend an air of romance to any celebration. The colors, shapes and smells seem to let people know something special is going on.

The advantages of silk flowers may not be so obvious, but if a bride takes a moment to analyze these she might be surprised at the result. Silk flowers will look fresh all day long no matter the time or place of your wedding. Their permanence makes them great keepsakes after the nuptials. They tend to be less expensive than real flowers and they never go out of season. Some of the most common cut flowers, such as roses, gerber daisies, and orchids, are available all year round. So you don't have to worry about seasonality with these flowers. But others, like peonies, calla lilies, and hydrangea have a definite season. Expect to pay more if you buy them out of season. And the quality may not be as good. The trend of renting silk flower centerpieces at weddings is rapidly becoming as popular as having fresh flowers. These stunning centerpieces can be customized and will complement every affair and save you thousands of dollars.

If your ceremony is going to be in a remote location it will be easier to take floral arrangements made from faux flowers than from real flowers because they travel much better. Likewise, if you're getting married in a warm season and have no place to refrigerate the flowers or are partial to very delicate flowers that tend to droop quickly, faux flowers may be your best option since they won't wilt. They are also non-allergenic and will not attract insects during outdoor ceremonies. Since they don’t need to be refrigerated they can be easily transported and received by the wedding party days or weeks before the wedding, giving the bride ample time to fix any problems that she feels necessary. Brides can also save on expensive delivery and set up costs with silk flowers since they can pick up the flowers from their florists ahead of time.

Faux flowers have come a very long way in recent years. The silk flowers available today closely resemble their living counterparts but don’t expect to find these high quality silks at you local craft stores. Some fresh florists can work with silks, but your best bet will be working with a silk florist since the two arts can be very different and silk florists will have the best selection and variety of high quality silks.

The bottom line when it comes to flowers, or anything else relating to your wedding, is that you need to do what will make you happy. Whether you choose silk or real flowers, you should weigh your options and make your choice based on your budget and what type of wedding you are having. While many silk flowers are incredibly realistic, for some brides, only real flowers will do. Whether silk or real, your wedding flowers should perfectly complement every aspect of your wedding.
