Wedding Colors 101

How does color play a part in your decisions with the wedding planning? Let’s first look into the art of color and what it means. Color is the appearance of objects described in terms of a person’s perception of their hue and lightness and saturation. When we were younger we were so fascinated with all different colors. In fact we should really thank the makers of Crayola for making colors available and affordable back in the 1900’s. Color shows off your creativity and personality. So let’s think “outside the box” and determine how this plays a part in the wedding.

Creative couples will invent, create, and come up with new ways to use colors in their wedding scheme. How do you determine what colors you want to use? Some people will choose by the meanings of color or by season. For summer you will want to stay with light colors such as yellows, white, pink, and pale blues. In Autumn try to stay with darker colors such as true red, hunter green, browns, and burgundy. Winter colors would be blues, grays, and ivory. So what are the meanings to some of the most used colors for weddings?

*White – protection, purification, and peace
*Red – courage, passion, health, protection, strength
*Pink – friendship and love
*Yellow – attraction, intellect, and study
*Green – fertility, growth, money, and envy
*Orange – energy and stimulation
*Light Blue – healing, happiness, and patience

So how do you use colors to go with the season? One Bride decided to get married in Autumn because she loves the colors of fall flowers and the way the leaves turn bright orange and yellows. She then made her color theme to be Harvest Gold and Chocolate Browns. This way she could do the bright colors in her flower selection and the sashes that went on her bridesmaids gowns. Then, for accents, she used pumpkins on the outside tables. This is the perfect example of how to pull in all the colors she wanted to use. I love the fact that the Bride chose scenery when making her decision.

Colors will be used for the table linens, flowers, dresses, registry items, tuxedo’s, invitations, cakes, and favors. We all start looking at the magazines to see what the latest trends are. We also start planning the “combinations” of colors that will look good together. Some examples would be brown and aqua, black and white, white and pink, and the list can go on. It is good to choose 2-3 different colors when planning your scheme. Next thing you know, your invitations will match your favors and the cake will match the flowers!

Do you need a little push when finding what colors work for you? Take a trip to a local fabric store and browse through all the different colors. Take the ones that make a statement to you. Put them together and take pictures of those samples. Another great suggestion is looking at the paint store and taking some of their palettes. You can also use the internet to search for color palette websites. Once you have your colors chosen then you are ready to start the planning of how all those colors are going to take a part of your wedding!
